London Gatwick Airport has registered a record passenger traffic number of more than four million people for the first time for last month.

During October, 4.02 million passengers passed through the airport terminals’ gates, an increase of 2% compared with the number recorded during the same month last year.

Demonstrating a continuous growth, the long-haul connections of the airport registered a 12.4% rise in the month and its cargo tonnage increased by 1.6% from October 2017.

Compared to last year, North Atlantic routes from the airport recorded a rise of 15.4%.

Gatwick Airport intends to start new China Eastern Airlines flights in December in order to begin, offering services to Shanghai three times a week.

“Gatwick continues to showcase the vital role it plays for the country, with October’s passenger figures the latest demonstration of this.”

In addition, the UK hub published its draft master plan last month, which revealed the vision of the airport for its future growth to the 2030s.

London Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate said: “Gatwick continues to showcase the vital role it plays for the country, with October’s passenger figures the latest demonstration of this.

“Last month saw over four million passengers travel through the airport, the first time Gatwick has broken this mark in October, demonstrating the passenger response to the breadth of destinations and airlines available from the airport.

“Gatwick’s growth is vital for the future prosperity of Britain and the country’s post-Brexit future, and our growing global connections are needed more than ever. This December our latest long-haul route will begin, as we open up yet further connections to Asia, with China Eastern starting their new service to Shanghai.”
