Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in collaboration with Tooshlights, has launched a pilot programme of smart restrooms in American Airlines’ Terminal 4 at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US.
The smart restroom technology uses overhead lights to signal whether a washroom stall is occupied or free. Each stall features a smart latch and indicator light.

When a stall is available, the light turns green and when occupied, it turns red. Blue indicator lights are also available for ambulatory stalls.
LAWA chief experience officer Barbara Yamamoto said: “We’re incredibly excited to try out this new technology, which should help improve our guest experience and allow us to better monitor and service our restrooms.
“The desire for clean and available restrooms is consistently in the top ranks of what guests want at an airport, and this will help us provide a higher level of service to the travelling public and allow us to better meet our strategic goal of delivering facilities and guest experiences that are exceptional.”
LAX and Tooshlights are also working with IT solutions provider Infax, which works in collaboration with the latter.

By GlobalDataTooshlights delivers real-time venue-specific data to Infax that enables airport staff to track the occupancy usage of restroom stalls.
The Smart Restrooms are also fitted with touchscreens near the entrance/exit, which allow guests to easily provide feedback regarding restrooms, including the need for supplies, maintenance and custodial services.
LAWA Facilities and Maintenance Group deputy executive director Michael Christensen said: “The real-time data that we will be receiving through our new smart restroom technology will help us to respond quicker when issues occur and gain baseline data for daily and weekly restroom usage, so we can better plan and deploy our resources, including custodians, and maintenance workers.
“Just like a physical traffic management system, these smart restrooms will allow us to do our job better and more efficiently.”
Under the pilot programme, nearly 20 smart restroom stalls have been installed at the airport. If successful, LAX will expand their use in Terminal 4 and throughout the airport.
