LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) has broken ground on the $4.9bn automated people mover (APM) project at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

LINXS is a joint venture (JV) between Fluor, ACS Infrastructure Development, Balfour Beatty, Bombardier Transportation, Dragados USA, Flatiron and Hochtief PPP Solutions.

Under the contract, which was first announced by the Los Angeles City Council in April last year, the JV will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the APM project over the next 30 years.

Scheduled to become operational by 2023, the APM is an electric train designed to transform public transportation, decrease traffic congestion and provide a better experience to passengers travelling to LAX.

“This project is a signature piece of mega infrastructure that will be ready to welcome the 2028 Summer Olympics.”

The people mover will operate on a 2.25-mile track with six stops. It will connect passengers to airport terminals together with pick-up and drop-off locations outside the Central Terminal Area.

Fluor infrastructure business president Terence Easton said: “We are eager to officially begin the construction and advancement of LAX’s world-class facilities.

“This project is a signature piece of mega infrastructure that will be ready to welcome the 2028 Summer Olympics, will improve mobility for travellers from around the world and empower progress for the Los Angeles region for generations to come.”

Fluor will act as the managing partner of the design-build joint venture team, LINXS Constructors, comprised of Fluor, Balfour Beatty, Dragados and Flatiron.

The driverless vehicles will operate at an interval of two minutes during peak periods. The automated people mover will provide transportation capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour.

Los Angeles World Airports believes that the APM will be able to carry 85 million travellers per annum.

Upon completion of the construction, LINXS Operators, comprising Fluor, ACS, Bombardier and Hochtief, will offer operations and maintenance services for 25 years.
