Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has started using a new automatic ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system on arriving baggage to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The enclosed tunnel in the baggage handling system (BHS) is equipped with UV bulbs that automatically sanitise luggage passing through the conveyor system.

The new UV radiation system has been introduced as part of the Airports 4.0 initiative for airport safety.

Malaysia Airports group chief-executive officer Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said: “We have been investing heavily in UV technology because the ultraviolet short wavelength has been proven to effectively eliminate surface contaminants such as mould, bacteria and other microbial biofilms.

“Last year, for our washrooms, we installed the UV chamber (UVC), which produces UV light to interrupt the transmission of infectious airborne pathogens. With this new UV technology in place, passengers can be assured of their safety when collecting their clean and sanitised bags at the reclaim area.”

Presently, the airport is carrying out an asset-upgrading exercise for the BHS, which features these UV disinfection tunnels.

In February, Malaysia Airports launched the Covid-19 national immunisation programme for facilitating gradual air travel recovery without compromising passenger safety.

Last week, KLIA started using a new 3D sensor technology for its automated queue management system (AQMS) to reduce the wait time to under ten minutes.

The AQMS counts the number of people in a particular area and monitors overcrowding proactively with the internet of things (IoT) technology.
