Airport operator Kansai Airports Group and VINCI Airports have partnered to decrease the use of plastic at their airports.

The partnership is expected to increase awareness regarding the effects of plastic on the environment, which is in line with VINCI Airports’ environmental strategy AirPact.

Around nine million tonnes of plastic waste are produced in Japan each year, of which four million tonnes are from plastic bottles, bags and other disposable plastics.

Japan has started charging customers for plastic bags since 1 July.

VINCI Airports and Kansai Airports Group have now begun providing ecological paper bags and bags made from organic, FSC-certified products at stores in Kansai, Osaka Itami and Kobe airports.

In addition, the airports are working towards sustainable development through different initiatives, including renewable energy alternatives, the shift to zero-emission vehicles (ZEV), and the sorting and reduction of waste.
