Kansai International Airport in Japan has installed 12 e-gates in a bid to provide a better passenger experience.

The gates have been installed at Terminal 1’s border control points and began service earlier this week.

Travellers at Kansai Airport can scan their boarding pass on their own to enter the airport security check area.

The airport expects the automatic doors to better manage the passenger flows and enable a contactless, optimal and secure travel experience.

Kansai International Airport, a part of the VINCI Airports network, aims to transform and improve the passenger flow and travel experience with the development of Fast Travel.

Earlier this year, Lisbon Airport in Portugal installed seven automatic e-gates.

Earlier this month, airport operator Kansai Airports Group and VINCI Airports partnered to decrease the use of plastic at their airports.

The partnership is expected to increase awareness regarding the effects of plastic on the environment, which is in line with VINCI Airports’ environmental strategy AirPact.

Last month, VINCI Airports resumed commercial flight activity across its network in Japan as travel restrictions have been eased in the country after the Covid-19 outbreak.

The operator started serving domestic passengers at Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and Kobe Airport, on 19 June.

In February last year, Kansai International Airport in Japan planned to invest approximately JPY100bn ($909.5m) to expand capacity and enhance safety.

In a separate development, Kansai Airports Group and VINCI Airports operated Osaka International Airport in Japan will reopen the North and South terminals on 5 August.

The airport has carried out major renovation works since February 2016 and aims to transform into a destination for locals and passengers.
