Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced plans to introduce smart check-in services at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport in 2020 in a bid to reduce the time taken to board a flight.

Known as JAL Smart Airport, the system features self-service bag drop machines and facial recognition technology.

The airline has also completed renovation work at the airport’s business and first-class lounges.

JAL customers can access the self-service bag drop machines from 28 October 2020. They can check-in via the airport kiosk and print individual baggage tags.

After the process, passengers can leave their bags at the counter and proceed to the boarding gate.

The kiosks will be available at counter O in Terminal 2. From April, counter M will also become operational.

By the first quarter of next year, passengers will also be able to use JAL’s facial recognition technology services by registering their photo when they first check in.

This service will be available at counter K in Terminal 2, next to the security screening entrance and boarding gate.

After the initial registration, passengers will be able to pass through security and board the plane without having to show any travel documents.

From January, JAL will introduce a special assistance counter to assist travellers. This facility will be available at the South Group Counter Area in Terminal 2.
