Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS) has upgraded its self-service border control solution, BorderXpress, to comply with the latest biometric screening rules in Canada.

ITS is a technology development division of Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Canada’s expanded biometric screening regulation, which will become effective from 31 March, will require major Canadian airports to conduct fingerprint verification for certain passengers using primary inspection kiosks.

Once the regulation comes into force, all temporary resident visa, study, and work permit applicants (excluding US citizens), as well as permanent residence applicants, will undergo fingerprint verification.

“Our BorderXpress primary inspection kiosks are the first to be adapted to accommodate the needs of the Canadian Government.”

The BorderXpress kiosks use a two-step process to accelerate the border clearance process and reduce passenger wait times by more than 60%.

The solution is fully accessible to passengers with special needs and can be configured with up to 35 languages.

Vancouver Airport Authority innovation and planning vice–president Steve Hankinson said: “The Government of Canada has stated that the collection of biometrics is a critical aspect of their immigration program and one that allows for accuracy in establishing a traveller’s identity.

“Our BorderXpress primary inspection kiosks are the first to be adapted to accommodate the needs of the Canadian Government while also providing a border control solution that unites security, efficiency, and innovation to transform the passenger experience.”

Besides boosting the border security, the biometrics, including fingerprints and facial photographs, help airports to decrease passenger wait times and improve passenger flow and operational efficiency.

It is estimated that more than 70 countries are using biometrics as part of their immigration programmes.
