KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the flag carrier of the Netherlands, has signed a codeshare agreement with the Italian airline ITA Airways to serve more destinations in Italy.

Under the agreement, travellers will be able to book KLM tickets to ITA’s European destinations and vice-versa.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines president and CEO Pieter Elbers said: “It’s really good news that KLM and ITA Airways have been able to reach an agreement so quickly, enabling them to work together on European routes.

“Italy is an important market for the airline industry in Europe, both for business and leisure travellers. Partnerships like this one are important to our ability to provide the best possible service for our customers, who travel through Schiphol from all corners of the world.”

The new pact between the two parties is expected to benefit KLM passengers, enabling them to fly to more destinations in Italy and other ITA destinations in south-east Europe.

Additionally, the agreement will allow easy passenger transfers at Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) airports.

Through this codeshare agreement, KLM travellers will be able to fly with ITA through Rome to various destinations including Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Bari, Brindisi, Lamezia Terme and Trieste in Italy.

The deal will also help ITA passengers, offering them access to KLM destinations including the UK and Scandinavia.

At present, KLM operates flights between Amsterdam and Milan, Turin, Genoa, Rome, Venice, Florence, Bologna and Catania.

In January, Air France-KLM Group awarded a contract to Swissport to offer services for its flights in Saudi Arabia.
