Technology and consulting company Indra has been awarded a contract by Argentina’s new air navigational service provider Empresa Argentina de Navegación Aérea (EANA) to supply an Instrument Landing System (ILS) to support operations in low-visibility conditions.

Under the contract, Indra will install the ILS at eight airports, including Ushuaia Airport, in Argentina.

Enabling airplanes to determine the glide slope to the head of the runway with total accuracy, the ILS systems help aircraft to land safely in bad weather conditions.

Once implemented, the ILS will significantly improve the capacity of airports and help them to offer improved services, particularly in winter, when snowfall can obstruct operations and even force the airports to close.

Pursuant to the terms of the contracts, airports located in Tucumán, Bariloche, Mar del Plata, Resistencia, Corrientes, and Posadas will be equipped with ILS CAT II systems.

Cordoba Airport will also feature a maximum level ILS (CAT III) that allows it to operate with virtually zero visibility.

In close co-operation with EANA, Indra will carry out a series of initial factory tests before addressing the installation and commissioning of the systems.

The contract also includes a warranty on all the supply and corrective and preventive maintenance in the facilities for a period of two years.

In recent times, Indra has worked with EANA and augmented the network of air traffic control centres in Argentina.

The company has also established the Center for Instruction, Improvement and Experimentation (CIPE), on Ezeiza, two simulators for the training of air traffic controllers who provide services in the country.
