Airport motion analytics specialist iinside has won a contract to deploy its solution for monitoring passenger traffic at the TSA security checkpoints at Indianapolis International Airport (IND).

The installation of the LiDAR-based motion analytics platform will enable the airport to give passengers updates on security checkpoint wait times in real-time and to improve their overall experience.

Indianapolis Airport Authority executive director Mario Rodriguez said: “It’s all about the customer experience.

“That’s our primary goal, and the wait time calculators are the latest addition to a range of technology the airport and its partners offer to enhance the travel experience, such as fast-access Wi-Fi, self-bag tag kiosks and even human-powered charging stations.”

“The wait time calculators are the latest addition to a range of technology the airport and its partners offer to enhance the travel experience.”

In addition to the 3D imaging technology known as LiDAR, the new platform uses machine learning to help Indianapolis Airport better manage passenger movements.

LiDAR uses invisible laser beams to detect objects both in motion and at rest and is more precise compared to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi-based indoor location technology.

The new solution offers real-time visibility into passenger behaviour and predictive analytics, which allows airport managers to mitigate foot traffic bottlenecks and optimise storefront retail sales.

TSA checkpoint wait time information will be given to IND passengers in the terminal on the airport’s network of Flight Information Displays (FIDs), as well as the LED digital signage being installed in Civic Plaza.

In addition to FID displays, the data from iinside will also be displayed on the airport’s website to allow passengers to get valuable information before they arrive at the airport.

iinside said that airports and other third-part travel data providers, including ride shares and airlines, can decrease traveller stress by offering wait time notices or fastest kerb-to-gate recommendations.
