Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reported that 71.5 million passengers travelled through the airport in 2019, which marks a decrease of 4.2% compared to 2018.

This is said to be the airport’s biggest decline in passenger numbers in ten years.

HKIA’s total flight movements last year totalled 419,730, a decline of 1.9% compared to the previous year.

The total cargo handled was 4.8 million tonnes, a fall of 6.1% compared to the previous year.

In 2019, the airport added 17 new destinations, including Beijing Daxing International Airport in China, Borg El Arab in Egypt, Dover Cheswold in the US, Doncaster in the UK and Guwahati in India, among others.

Last November, HKIA reported a year-on-year decline of 16.2% in passenger volume.

Airport Authority Airport Operations executive director Vivian Cheung said: “We went through a challenging year in 2019. I must thank the 78,000 members of the airport community for their dedication to ensuring smooth, safe journeys for our passengers, especially in difficult circumstances.

“Looking ahead, we will continue to enhance the airport’s facilities to improve the passenger experience at HKIA even more.”

“Following the commissioning of the Terminal 1 (T1) extension and the revamp of the East Hall food court in 2019, our enhancements of T1 will continue with gate transformation, the commissioning of Sky Bridge and the extension of Car Park 4.”

Last week, the main structure of the Sky Bridge was delivered to its final position, which concluded the prefabrication phase.

The Sky Bridge is expected to be the longest airside bridge in the world and allows the A380, the largest passenger aircraft, to pass underneath it.
