Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) has implemented a comprehensive cleaning and maintenance exercise at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) amid the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

This includes cleaning of the ceiling at Terminal 1, in both the restricted and non-restricted areas.

The total ceiling area of Terminal 1 is 172,000m², equivalent to almost 24 football fields, the AA noted.

The cleaning activities are aimed at preparing the airport for the resumption of air traffic when the pandemic subsides. The authority expects to wrap up the whole cleaning process by August this year.

AA General Technical Services general manager Amen Tong said: “We are catching the time when the terminal is less busy to deploy several cherry pickers in different areas to carry out ceiling cleaning work at the same time.

“In addition, the cleaning work could be carried out for a longer hours per day, we expected that the entire cleaning work could be shortened from one year to three months and also help to reduce the cost.”

There are currently 19 cherry pickers and around 50 cleaning workers involved in the ceiling cleaning work at Terminal 1.

The AA is also carrying out cleaning and maintenance work for the ‘Spirit of Sha Tin’ replica aircraft under the coordination of the Hong Kong Historical Aircraft Association.

Every three to four months, the ‘Spirit of Sha Tin’ is cleaned for around three hours during late night.

Due to the lockdown, the aircraft has been lowered from the ceiling for a full inspection this time. The team will inspect various parts of the aircraft to check for any damage. They will also test moving parts, and re-inflate the tires.

Last month, the AA launched the latest disinfection technologies, including disinfection channels, antimicrobial coating and autonomous cleaning robots at the airport to reduce the risk of the Covid-19 infection.

It also rolled out a new relief package worth $258m to aid the airlines’ aviation support services operators during the Covid-19 pandemic.
