Finland’s Helsinki Airport has announced that its new baggage handling system will be rolled out in phases over the next year.

The airport expects to handle 30 million annual passengers in future years.

Part of the airport operator Finavia’s €1bn investment to expand and develop Helsinki Airport, the new luggage system is expected to increase the airport’s throughput and quality.

Finavia service manager of security services at Helsinki Airport Joni Pekkanen listed features of the new system. He said: “Three up-to-date cargo luggage X-rays, which can inspect up to 3,300 more bags per hour. New space for a luggage storage area that has room for 1,000 more bags.

“A conveyer belt that reaches a staggering 15km in length. New ramps, baggage carousels and transfer feeders. All in all, 10,000m² more space.”

Finavia noted that the baggage handling capability is expected to be 130% more efficient than the existing system.
