Heathrow Airport in the UK has selected Vanderlande as its strategic baggage partner for a period of ten years.

As per the ‘pan-airport’ agreement, Vanderlande will be responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance programmes across all the terminals in the airport.

The contract also includes the baggage control room operations.

With this new contract, both organisations will build on their current partnership.

Vanderlande has been at Heathrow for around two decades, when the Terminal 5 project commenced.

The company was a part of the PT5TBS (Post Terminal 5 Transfer Baggage System) cross-campus tunnel, T3IB (Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage), Western Baggage HLC (high-level controls – VIBES) upgrade and the baggage IT service package developments at the airport.

Heathrow, as the UK’s main airport hub, requires a baggage system that can handle the millions of travellers that pass through the airport each year.

To support the return to its growth after the Covid-19 pandemic, Heathrow has planned to upgrade and update its current terminals.

Heathrow Airport finance director of procurement Helen Elsby said: “Planning for the long-term has always been a priority for the aviation industry. Our sector is currently grappling with the unprecedented impacts of Covid-19, but aviation will play a key role in helping economies across the world rebuild once we enter the recovery phase.

“Heathrow is taking steps now to ensure we have the infrastructure in place to support Britain’s growth when the time comes and we’re delighted to work with Vanderlande once more to deliver one of the most innovative and resilient baggage systems in the world, as we continue to deliver world-class passenger experience.”
