London Heathrow Airport in the UK has reported a year-on-year decrease of 52% in March passenger numbers due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
Of the three million journeys in the airport, many were reported to be repatriations after the travel restrictions and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s advice against non-essential travel.
The airport expects the passenger numbers to decrease by 90% in April, which is expected to affect the industry significantly.
Last week, Heathrow Airport shifted its operations to one runway and has planned to consolidate its operations to Terminals 2 and 5.

The airport is currently prioritising cargo flights carrying medical supplies.
As per the recommendations from Public Health England, Heathrow has implemented different measures such as the provision of hand sanitiser dispensers, additional cleaning and sanitation procedures, signage and floor stickers to implement social distancing among passengers.
Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “Heathrow continues to serve the nation by keeping vital supply lines open, and helping people get home.
“Now is the time to agree a common international standard for healthcare screening in airports so that when this crisis recedes, people can travel with confidence and we can get the British economy moving again.”
Last week, Heathrow Airport announced that it has planned to cut pay for its employees amid the pandemic.
