London’s Heathrow Airport has launched its Airspace and Future Operations consultation, which aims to obtain a public opinion regarding the use of the existing two runways.

The latest phase of an eight-week consultation that commenced on 8 January will last until 4 March.

It will also focus on problems such as future flight paths, better use of the existing two runways and noise management measures when the proposed third runway starts operations and proposals on night flights.

Heathrow plans to organise more than 30 consultation events across local boroughs throughout the consultation period, where people can ask questions and share their feedback.

The latest public consultation comes after the airport’s first expansion consultation, held from January to March last year.

“It is crucial that our plans maximise the benefits of expansion across the country, including for the communities closest to us.”

A further consultation is planned in June, which will focus on issues such as emerging plans for expansion including the new runway and associated physical infrastructure, as well as presenting options to mitigate and manage the effects of the airport’s growth.

Heathrow Expansion executive director Emma Gilthorpe said: “Heathrow’s aim is to design a sustainable, fair and more efficient future airport while connecting the UK to global growth.

“It is crucial that our plans maximise the benefits of expansion across the country, including for the communities closest to us, and working in partnership with our neighbours is just one way of ensuring they do so. We are committed to delivering expansion responsibly, and we encourage everyone to have their say and take part.”

In June 2018 British MPs voted to approve the Airports National Policy Statement, which provides support for the Heathrow expansion.

The proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport is forecast to cost around £14bn. A new runway would boost the airport’s capacity from 85.5 million passengers to 130 million.

The UK’s Department for Transport previously stated that no expansion at the airport would mean London’s five airports would reach full capacity by 2034.

Officials expect the project to create 114,000 extra jobs in the area around the airport by 2030, with an extra 16 million long-haul seats by 2040.
