Property and infrastructure group Lendlease has won a contract for the southern terminal expansion project at Gold Coast Airport in Australia.

Lendlease will deliver the next phase of the airport’s A$370m ($262m) redevelopment, known as Project LIFT.

The contract includes the construction of a three-level terminal, including aerobridges, built to the south of the current facility.

The new terminal is expected to double the floor area of the existing terminal, while providing more flexibility to serve domestic and international services.

“Gold Coast Airport looks after 6.6 million passengers a year, and this will more than double by 2037.”

Up to 1,500 jobs are likely to be created during the construction process.

Queensland Airports CEO Chris Mills said that Lendlease’s appointment represented a significant step forward for the Gold Coast Airport project, which would address capacity issues and enable future passenger growth.

Mills said: “Gold Coast Airport looks after 6.6 million passengers a year, and this will more than double by 2037.

“The existing terminal is currently operating beyond capacity. This expansion will not only help us meet demand, but it will create an entry point to the city, befitting the nation’s leading tourism region.”

Gold Coast Airport completed the first phase of Project LIFT in 2018, which helped to develop 20,000m² of apron space to park more aircraft ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

The terminal expansion project is scheduled to be concluded by mid-2021.
