Swiss airport operator Flughafen Zurich has received a conditional letter of award for Jewar International Airport in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Noida International Airport CEO Arun Veer Singh handed over the letter to the Flughafen Zurich CEO Daniel Bircher.

Last month, Flughafen Zurich secured the concession for the design, development and operation of Jewar International Airport. The operator will construct and operate the airport for a period of 40 years.

Earlier this year, Noida International Airport (NIAL) called for e-bids for the construction of the airport.

Indian companies GMR, Adani, L&T and Reliance Infra competed for the contract to build the airport. As well as Flughafen Zurich, Hong Kong ADP also reportedly bought the bid documents.

Flughafen Zurich submitted the highest per-passenger bid, causing it to win the concession.

On 9 December, Flughafen Zurich was approved as the developer by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet.

Times of India stated that the operator will now apply for security clearance from the union home ministry before receiving the final approval letter.

Located 80km from India’s capital city Delhi, Jewar International Airport is expected to accommodate the region’s growing flight traffic.

The investment for the first phase of construction is estimated at CHF650m ($649.6m). The first phase is expected to be completed by 2023.

After the first phase, Jewar Airport will have an estimated annual capacity of 12 million passengers.

Upon completion, the airport will feature six to eight runways and encompass an area of around 5,000ha.

In March, Flughafen Zurich won auctions to operate Vitória and Macaé airports in Brazil. The deal was valued at R$437m ($114.73m).
