Aireon and FlightAware’s GlobalBeacon flight tracking system has gone live to provide communications between airlines and air-traffic controllers in real-time.

Launched ahead of implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Global Aeronautical Distress Safety System (GADSS) recommendations, GlobalBeacon offers airlines with precise global aircraft tracking for their aircraft continuously worldwide.

By pooling FlightAware’s data processing platform and web-interface, with Aireon’s space-based ADS-B network, GlobalBeacon surpasses borders and flight information regions (FIRs) and has been designed to eliminate coverage gaps in polar airspace, over deserts and oceanic regions.

The solution uses tracking information from Aireon’s space-based ADS-B network and FlightAware’s contextual flight data such as origin, destination, flight plan route and estimated time of arrival.
