Finnish airport operator Finavia has announced plans to start demolition work on the P1/P2 car park in front of Terminal 2 (T2) at Helsinki Airport.

The work forms part of the expansion and modification of the terminal.

Helsinki Airport T2 expansion plan involves a brand-new building constructed in front of the existing terminal, which is currently occupied by P1/P2 car park, taxi ranks and bus stations.

The new T2 will feature all of the arrivals and departures facilities that are in the current terminal building. It will also have a travel centre connecting numerous means of public transportation.

“We’ve been designing temporary solutions with great care and will inform passengers about these as early as possible.”

The expansion also includes a new entrance to the terminal with arrivals and departures halls and new public transportation links.

Construction work on Helsinki Airport T2 is likely to affect passenger movements when it begins next year.

Finavia T2 expansion and change process project manager Tuomo Lindstedt said:  “We’ve been developing the plan for almost one year now. The overall plan has been locked and now we’re in a more elaborate planning phase.

“Unfortunately, the expansion project is set to affect the movement of many passengers. We’ve been designing temporary solutions with great care and will inform them about these as early as possible. All these solutions are designed to last long, and they will not change a lot during the expansion work.”

“When the project is completed, the terminal will be much better for passengers.”

Finavia’s airport business comprises two areas, including Helsinki Airport and network airports. Its network covers 21 airports across Finland.
