Finnish airport operator Finavia has decided to continue with the Helsinki Airport Development Programme despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The move comes around a week after the airport operator starting easing restrictions imposed due to the outbreak.

The Helsinki Airport Development Programme includes building a new terminal beside the existing terminal building.

The Terminal 2 will feature a large square-shaped departure hall with six separate departure areas. Passengers will drop the baggage and pass through the departure area islands towards security control. The baggage will be transported to the lower levels through lifts.

Helsinki Airport Development Programme project director Martti Nurminen said: “The departure areas could be described as islands. When you enter the departure hall, there will be two islands on both sides. You can find the remaining two islands when you walk towards the security control area.”

Overall, the Terminal 2 departure hall will have 86 check-in desks and points to further facilitate operations at the airport. Every island will have four points for special baggage.

Nurminen added: “11 baggage conveyor belts will be built in the hall. This means that there will be more of them than in the current baggage reclaim halls. The conveyor belts will also be longer.”

However, the new Terminal 2 will only have a single baggage reclaim hall to streamline logistics processes.

The development programme is now 70% complete, and is expected to be finished by 2023.

The decision to continue with the construction works is also expected to support employment during this crisis and will support local economy.
