Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) has commenced work on the Mex$4.245bn ($222m) expansion project at Monterrey International Airport.

Work is expected to be completed by 2025 and aims to increase the airport’s capacity by 50% to serve 16.5 million travellers.

The project is expected to be carried out in two stages. In the first, the public area will be expanded and the check-in areas will be installed with 88 fixed and 20 automated counters.

‘Wing 1’ will also be constructed, which will be equipped with 11 boarding gates.

The second phase of the work will include the construction of an inspection point, with 12 new passenger service lines to ensure better transit.

Plans also involve constructing ‘Wing 2’, which will feature 15 boarding gates with walkways. The domestic and international baggage claim areas will be expanded.

The operator also stated that the airport will remain fully operational during the project and hopes for minimum impact on operations.

Monterrey International Airport is located in Nuevo León, Mexico, with OMA headquartered in its air cargo area.

Last May, OMA opened the Acapulco airport terminal building.

Constructed with an investment of Mex$615m ($31.4), the new building spans 18,000m² and is capable of handling approximately 1.3 million annual passengers during its first phase.
