The Government of Egypt has opened Sphinx International Airport (SPX) for regular domestic flights as part of a trial operation of the airport.
SPX aims to spur growth in the country’s tourism sector in the country due to its close proximity to the Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and other historic areas.

It will also lessen pressure on Cairo International Airport, serving the Greater Cairo districts of 6th of October and Sheikh Zayed and the governorates of Fayoum and Beni Suef.
Egypt Air flew its maiden domestic flight from the newly inaugurated airport. The airline is expected to operate almost 15 flights per week to Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada, Luxor, and Aswan.
Construction work on the SPX was launched in 2017 by the Egyptian consultancy firm with a budget of EGP300m ($16.86m).
The new airport is able to process approximately 300 passengers per hour.

By GlobalDataSPX is equipped with a departure hall spanning across 975m² and an arrival hall of 1,100m² and also features a new VIP hall, five counters, as well as 42 offices including administrative, security, and customs.
The new airport is fitted with modern air traffic control and automatic landing systems. It also features security systems including x-ray explosive detectors and CCTV, as well as thermal surveillance cameras.
The experimental operation of regular internal flights is set to last until 9 February.
