Edmonton International Airport in Alberta, Canada, has been granted funding of $19.8m (C$24.7m) from the Canadian Government to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The funding will be used to ensure continued air services as well as carry out important transportation infrastructure projects at the airport.

Canada Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra said: “These critical investments at the Edmonton International Airport will help maintain airport and passenger safety and security and improve operational efficiency and connectivity by ensuring the airport continues to meet all federal safety standards.”

The government is providing Edmonton International Airport $14.8m (C$18.5m) from Transport Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program for executing key infrastructure works such as upgrading runways and airfield lighting.

Improvement works are expected to begin later this year and be complete in 2024.

These works are aimed at improving the safety of passengers, aircrews and airport employees.

Additionally, the government will offer funding of $4.9m (C$6.2m) from Transport Canada’s Airport Relief Fund.

The funding will be used to help the airport maintain its operations as well as for essential air services for residents and workers in Edmonton and surrounding communities.

Edmonton International Airport president and CEO Tom Ruth said: “Restoring strong, international air service is an imperative for our business community, the tourism visitor economy and passengers.

“This important federal funding will help us maintain operations and start infrastructure improvements to enhance safety.”

Earlier this week, the Government of Canada agreed to offer nearly $10.1m (C$12.7m) to Winnipeg Richardson International Airport to help the airport recover from the Covid-19 impact.
