Edinburgh Airport has revealed plans to invest approximately £20m to improve transport access at the airport.

The move is part of the airport’s development programme.

In the project’s first phase, a new East Terminus is expected to be delivered by summer next year. It will house the airport’s taxi operations, which includes black cabs and private hire vehicles.

The current rank will be transferred to the airport’s east side from the multi-storey car park’s ground floor.

The old runway can be used to access the facility, which is expected to decrease traffic congestion on Eastfield Road during peak hours.

The East Terminus will also include covered walkways for passengers, a new passenger bridge, a new PRM waiting area and a self-service kiosk for private taxi bookings.

In the second phase of the project, a new access road will be built to reduce congestion on Eastfield Road. The drop-off area will be moved to a new area.

Edinburgh Airport CEO Gordon Dewar said: “As well as making it easier for licensed taxis to drop off and pick up passengers, this multi-million pound project will also see the construction of a new access road, helping to ease the congestion we currently see on Eastfield Road at peak times.

“By investing in our infrastructure, we’ll be able to deliver better access to public transport and increase those travel options for passengers, directly improving their journey.”

In July, Edinburgh Airport installed Everbridge’s Critical Event Management (CEM) platform to advance critical communications and protect passengers, staff and service personnel during emergencies.
