Edinburgh Airport has deployed Everbridge’s Critical Event Management (CEM) platform to improve critical communications and protect passengers, staff, and service personnel during emergencies.

The new system will exchange and augment multiple manual processes, and accelerate the success of communication across operations, from the emergency services to airlines, retail units, and local agencies.

Edinburgh Airport is the busiest airport in Scotland, currently managing 14.3 million passengers per annum and growing steadily towards 20 million.

Edinburgh Airport senior operations and resilience manager of Airport Operations and Assurance Myles Grima said: “There were two incidents that helped to shape our review of critical communications at the airport. The first was a tram accident on our campus. While it thankfully only resulted in minor injuries, it caused disruption and restrictions to the tram service from Edinburgh City Centre to the airport.

“We also experienced a major Scottish Power outage which affected the airport, and this is always a threat to the smooth running of operations.

“Finally, we organised a counter-terrorism exercise involving over 20 organisations and 400 people. These three events gave us a huge amount of insight and enabled us to consider how technology could be used to improve our response overall.”

The airport was primarily looking for a platform to eliminate the multiple processes that were previously being used to cascade information to different groups.

It selected Everbridge’s Critical Event Management solution due to its ability to combine all functionality onto a single platform.

The solution is also capable of locating employees at risk and gives the airport enhanced and actionable risk intelligence, as well as help with incident preparation and response.

In the first phase, Edinburgh Airport will use Everbridge’s platform to target emergency services, airlines serving the airport, and on-site retail outlets.

During the second phase, known as ‘Airport Control Futures’, the airport will address technology including perimeter security and fire alarms.
