Siemens Logistics has won a bid to modernise the hold baggage screening system (HBS) at Terminal 2 of Dublin Airport.

Dublin Airport is operated by Irish semi-state airport company Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

Under the contract, Siemens Logistics will replace the present HBS, which comprises 6km of conveyor and an automated sorting system.

The contract also requires the company to install an additional line to increase the system’s capacity.

One of the project’s challenges will be to execute the work without disrupting passenger operations and flight schedules.

DAA Design and Delivery head professor Stephen Byrne said: “The decision to opt for Siemens is based on the long and positive relationship. In addition, Siemens has demonstrated its commitment to Dublin Airport, providing an experienced team on site.”

The execution of new baggage screening units will be carried out in accordance with the improved international safety policy.

According to tightened international security rules, all baggage inspection systems at European airports must be equipped with explosives detection systems based on Standard 3 HBS security regulatory requirements.

Siemens Logistics CEO Michael Reichle said: “We are delighted to once more support DAA with the baggage handling system at Terminal 2 and to continue our partnership with Dublin Airport.”

In addition, Siemens Logistics is installing new hold baggage screening systems at Munich and Palma de Mallorca airports.

The company noted that it has long-term operation and maintenance contracts with over 40 airports worldwide.
