American passenger carrier Delta Air Lines is set to introduce the first US biometric terminal at Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal (Terminal F) in Atlanta.

Delta has teamed up with the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for the rollout of the biometric terminal.

Customers departing to an international destination have the option of using facial recognition technology from curb to gate at the airport starting late this year.

Using this optional service, passengers can check-in at the self-service kiosks in the lobby and drop checked baggage at the counters in the lobby.

The biometric terminal serves as identification at the TSA checkpoint and helps passengers to board a flight at any gate in Terminal F.

Besides Delta’s flyers, the service will be offered to its partner airlines such as Aeromexico, Air France-KLM or Virgin Atlantic Airways.

To use this option, passengers need to enter their passport information when prompted during online check-in.

After that, they will have to click ‘Look’ on the screen at the kiosk in the lobby, or approach the camera at the counter in the lobby, the TSA checkpoint or when boarding at the gate.

Customers can pass through once the green check mark flashes on the screen. And, if they do not want to participate, they can proceed normally through the airport.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport interim general manager Balram Bheodari said: “This is the latest example of Delta’s investment in, and partnership with, the world’s busiest and most efficient airport. The launch of the biometric terminal uses technology and software developed by NEC.
