Dutch engineering services provider Deerns Group has signed a KWD10.19m ($33.6m) contract with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in Kuwait to offer management and supervision services at Kuwait International Airport.

Deerns secured the contract in a competitive bidding process that started last year.

Under the terms of the five-year contract, the company will provide the services from its regional office in Kuwait, in addition to local expertise and logistical support from Al-Nabhan Engineering Consultancy, along with specialist support from its offices in Europe.

Deerns will partner with the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) to develop specialised communication, navigation and surveillance systems, in addition to meteorological systems for air traffic management applications.

The company will also contribute to the development of navigational capabilities, especially after the addition of new runways and a control tower to boost air traffic capacity before the opening of the main airport, according to Kuwait News Agency.

The company noted that the new project serves as an addition to its global portfolio of airport projects, with current projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Separately, the airport will install radio frequency identification (RFID) technology at a total of four exit gates to check the arriving passengers.

RFID uses wireless electromagnetic frequencies to identify and track moving objects. It is said to make arrival procedures hassle-free for passengers.
