In a bid to limit the spread of Covid-19, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has extended the suspension of transit / transfer services at the airport.

This move follows the government announcement stating that the anti-epidemic measures, which came into effect on 25 March, will be implemented for the foreseeable future.

The measures include the suspension of air transit / transfer, cross-boundary land transport and cross-boundary ferry transfer.

In addition, all residents of Hong Kong arriving from foreign countries by air will not be permitted to enter Hong Kong.

Residents of Mainland China, Macao and Taiwan who have visited any foreign country 14 days before arrival can also not enter Hong Kong.

Most shops and restaurants in the airport terminal will be suspended until further notice.

Currently, the airport has approximately 20 shops and restaurants open with shortened operating hours to serve passengers with essential services.

Airport Authority Hong Kong has also extended the rent-free concession period for the shops and restaurants that are closed.

The shops that are open will continue to avail a waiver on the fixed rent until further notice.

Last month, Hong Kong Airport Authority introduced a new relief package worth HK$1bn ($129m) to aid the airport community during the pandemic.

The relief package was announced with backing from the government.

In February, Hong Kong Airport introduced other relief measures in the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic and anti-government protests that disrupted airport operations.

In January, HKIA reported that 71.5 million passengers travelled through the airport in 2019, which marks a decrease of 4.2% compared to 2018.
