Kansas City Aviation Department and Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate will begin construction of a new $1.5bn terminal at Kansas City International Airport by the end of March.

The new terminal will be constructed at the site of the closed Terminal A and is scheduled to become operational by 2023.

The new replacement terminal will feature 39 gates and can be expanded to accommodate up to 42 gates as per the future requirements. A new apron area to be built around the new terminal will also include new fuel hydrants.

More than 1 million square feet will be provided for improved and efficient security, ample amenities and more bathrooms.

“Edgemoor made a promise to Kansas Citians to deliver a transformational new terminal and we are ready to move forward.”

The terminal will include a two-level curbside drop-off and pickup area, which will be more convenient and less crowded for passengers.

Plans also include expanding the waiting areas at each gate to accommodate the growing number of travellers on modern airplane.

Terminals B and C will continue to be operational during the construction of the new integrated project. They will be demolished upon transfer of operations to the new integrated terminal.

Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate managing director Geoffrey Stricker said: “This is a great day for Kansas City. The city council’s support of the ordinance allows our team to advance design and construction activities, put people to work, and activate the programs and services we’ve committed to providing to the region.

“Edgemoor made a promise to Kansas Citians to deliver a transformational new terminal and we are ready to move forward.”

The project is expected to create up to 5,000 construction-related jobs. It is also projected to provide monetary benefits worth $28.85m to the local community by generating new jobs for the local workforce and stimulating the development of small businesses.
