New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled a new proposal to upgrade Stewart International Airport with new inspection station for international flights and rebrand as New York International at Stewart Field.

Under the 17th proposal of the 2018 State of the State, Cuomo unveiled plans to invest $34m for modernising and expanding the airport in Orange County.

Cuomo urged the Port Authority to approve the $27m investment to expand international passenger service in the Mid-Hudson Valley. The fund will be used for the construction of a US Customs and Border Protection federal inspection station (FIS).

The new FIS will allow the airport to handle both domestic and international flights once completed in the first quarter of 2021.

Adding 20,000ft² of space to the existing terminal, the FIS will help screen up to 400 international passengers per hour.

“Design of the international passenger service is expected to be completed by third quarter of this year.”

Based on the Port Authority sustainable building guidelines, the FIS will facilitate hardstand operations, including transporting passengers from terminals to aircraft.

Cuomo said: “By transforming Stewart Airport into a state-of-the-art transportation destination, we are providing an inviting gateway to the region and supercharging an economic engine for the entire Mid-Hudson Valley.”

Design of the international passenger service is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.

The proposal also includes a $7m private investment for installation of ‘Carport’ photovoltaic system, which will be built, installed, owned and operated by the proposer.
