Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has opened a new ground transportation centre to improve connectivity for passengers commuting to and from the site.

Built with an investment of $841m, the multimodal facility spans 2.5 million square foot area and includes rental car facilities, public parking and a place for service dogs.

The new facility offers a central access point for rental cars and parking, buses, Metra, and other regional transit serving the O’Hare Airport.

Alongside enhancing passengers’ accessibility and reducing traffic in and around the terminals, the parking and rental car facility is expected to prepare O’Hare Airport for the proposed $8.5bn terminal expansion project to be carried out over the next decade.

Partial funding of $272m for the project was financed with the Transportation Infrastructure Finance Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan obtained in 2013.

“Our new consolidated shuttle system will better serve the city and the O’Hare community with a reduction in vehicles on airport roadways.”

The facility at O’Hare Airport will be served by 13 rental car operators, including E-Z Rent a Car, Fox Rent a Car and Sixt.

The public parking section can accommodate up to 2,600 cars. The parking building is also equipped with 12 electronic car charging stations, a grassy area for service animals, two rooms for new mothers and a future concessions spot.

Hertz properties and concessions director and O’Hare RAC chair Josh Blum said: “O’Hare’s rental car companies are proud to invest in the airport’s future with this new facility that not only elevates the rental car customer experience at O’Hare, but which also provides an enhanced working environment for our employees.

“In addition, our new consolidated shuttle system will better serve the city and the O’Hare community with a reduction in vehicles on airport roadway to result in less congestion and fewer emissions.”

Transystems, in collaboration with Carol Ross Barney Architects, designed the new parking facility which was completed by Austin Powers Partners, a joint venture formed by Austin Commercial, Power Construction, and Ujamaa Construction.
