Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has agreed to purchase five 35ft Proterra Catalyst E2 electric buses and five 125kW Proterra plug-in charging systems from electric transportation company Proterra.

CLT, which serves around 46 million passengers each year, will become the ninth airport to purchase the electric buses for ground transportation.

The Catalyst vehicles do not have tailpipe emissions and decrease dependency on fossil fuels, contributing to CLT’s sustainability goals.

CLT will also deploy five Proterra plug-in chargers that use the universal J1772-CCS Type 1 charging standard, which will enable buses, utility vehicles, and cars to share the same chargers.

CLT is the first airport to make use of the Georgia State Contract to purchase Proterra electric buses. The state of Georgia has selected Proterra as a state-wide vendor for electric buses.

The battery-electric buses will be manufactured in Greenville, South Carolina.

With the deployment of zero-emission buses, CLT will be one of the airports across the US leading the shift to electric energy.

Other airports include San Francisco International Airport, John F Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Sacramento International Airport.

CLT offers non-stop service to 178 destinations, including 37 international locations and three US territories.

In 2015, the airport launched the $2.5bn Destination CLT development plan, which includes the construction of elevated roadway, terminal expansions, concourse renovations, and a fourth parallel runway.
