Singapore has postponed the construction of Terminal 5 of Singapore Changi Airport for two years.

Channel News Asia stated that the announcement was made by Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

This decision was taken due to the uncertainty amid the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic.

Singapore has carried out a thorough study regarding the future of aviation due to the pandemic. However, the answers to the questions will only be available after a few months.

Wan said: “That’s why we’ve already decided that we will take a pause in the T5 project. Under normal circumstances, if not for Covid-19, we would have to start calling for a major civil engineering tender quite soon. But we have decided to take a pause for two years.

“Let us complete this study of the future of aviation and it is not just the two years because we need to see how the development of the pandemic globally will be like. It will affect T5 and in terms of timing, minimum we will push it back by two years.”

In April 2018, Changi Airport Group (CAG) appointed the Master Building Consultants to provide architectural design and engineering consultancy services for the development of T5.

The new passenger Terminal 5 is being developed at Changi International Airport to enhance the airport’s capacity for anticipated future growth. The new terminal is set to be one of the world’s biggest airport terminals.

Construction on T5 is expected to begin in the 2020s, with completion scheduled for the 2030s.

Last month, CAG announced that it will suspend operations at Terminal 4 of Singapore Changi Airport from 16 May due to the pandemic.

CAG also suspended the operations at Terminal 2 of the airport for 18 months, effective from 1 May.
