Canberra Airport has published a preliminary draft of its 2020 masterplan that aims to bring more inbound passengers to the airport.

The draft focuses on bringing higher volumes of passengers onto more aircraft, across a broader range of airlines.

It reveals the airport’s plans to attract a higher number of international and low-cost carriers, increasing passenger traffic within the next five to eight years.

Inbound tourism, education and investment, and outbound business services are the key areas that the plan identifies for expansion.

Canberra Airport Aviation head Michael Thomson said: “The airport currently serves more than three million passengers a year, but those numbers are forecast to rise to more than nine million by 2040 if all goes to plan.

“We continue to collaborate with the ACT and NSW Governments, who support our plans for growing our aviation business, and we are optimistic about future growth. Our region has a lot to offer Australia and the world.”

The company noted that the 2020 masterplan preliminary draft is issued in accordance with the standards of the Airports Act 1996. It was also prepared in consultation with the community and key airport stakeholders.

This April, the airport announced the construction of a taxiway extension for providing safer aircraft movements and reducing the amount of time taken by planes to taxi.

In January 2015, Canberra Airport’s 2014 masterplan received approval from the Australian Government, setting out the strategic plan for the next two decades.
