The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has sought further bids from international companies for the planned expansion project at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Companies can submit their bids by the final deadline of 22 January 2019, reported The Kathmandu Post.

The successful bidder will be awarded contracts for soil filling and construction of international parking bays on the northern side of the airport’s runway.

Under the TIA Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project, the fourth package of the works involves supply of 2.1 million cubic metres of soil to fill the ravine near the runway. This section will see construction of nine new parking bays.

The project also involves construction of approximately 450m of taxiway on the northern section.

In December 2016, CAAN cancelled the contract awarded to Spanish group Constructora Sanjose for non-performance and later split the project into four packages.

TIA plans to have 13 new international parking bays within the next three years. This is expected to help decrease congestion at the country’s sole international airport. Once operational, this extra capacity will bring the number of parking bays at TIA to 22.

CAAN plans to construct the four parking bays using its own resources, while the remaining nine will be built through ADB funding.

During the January-September period of 2018, 3.1 million passengers passed through the airport, which is an increase of 12.51% year-on-year.
