The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is planning to award a construction contract for a third passenger terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) by July this year.

Two Japanese consortiums of Japan Shimizu Corporation and Mitsubishi have submitted proposals for the contract in response to the construction tender, reported news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

CAAB chairman air vice marshal Naim Hassan told BSS: “The tender evaluation process is going on, we are hopeful to give the work order for constructing the third terminal by July if everything goes smoothly.”

It is estimated that the construction of the third terminal building will entail an investment of BDT136.1bn ($1.61bn), which was approved by the National Economic Council in October 2017.

The Government of Bangladesh will contribute BDT23.95bn ($283.9m) of the total cost, while the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will grant funding assistance of BDT112.14bn ($1.32bn).

Hassan further added: “After our evaluation, the technical proposal will be sent to JICA headquarters in Japan to get its final node. If JICA clears the technical proposal, we will open the financial proposal here.”

The construction work of the third terminal building is expected to be completed within three to four years, but its partial operation is likely to begin by the end of next year.

Spanning over an area of 2.25 million square feet, the new international passenger terminal will be more than twice as large as the combined area of the existing two terminals of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The project, which is being executed by CAAB and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, will also include the construction of a 5,900m² VVIP complex, a 41,200m² cargo facility and a multi-level car parking garage.

Once the new terminal becomes operational, it will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from the current eight million to about 20 million per annum. It will also boost cargo capacity from 200,000t to 500,000t.

As part of the project, a number of exit and connecting taxiways, a parking apron, roads, and an airport road and a drainage system will be constructed.
