Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has deployed a new full body scanner at the Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar to deal with smuggling and money laundering threats.

The system will scan travellers and check whether they are carrying any illegal items or concealing anything under their clothes.

A CAA spokesperson told The Express Tribune that the new scanner has started functioning at the airport.

The CAA spokesperson said: “It is not harmful and is quite different from body X-ray machine. The machine is certainly costly but harmless.

“Not everybody will have to go through the scanner, if security officials suspect somebody they will put that person in front of the scanner.”

The latest machine was brought following complaints from health experts who argued that the X-ray scanners widely used are dangerous to human health.

“This development contract will provide greater flexibility in the systems’ use while maintaining the benefits of conducting an unmanned mission.”

Once suspected, passengers will be checked using the new scanner and the machine will be operated by the Airport Security Force.

Equipped with the mirror technology that is being used at many airports globally, the new scanner will check for anything hidden beneath clothing of suspected travellers.

This type of full-body scanner has already been installed at Karachi and other airports in the country.

Located a ten-minute drive from the centre of Peshawar, Bacha Khan is the fourth busiest airport in Pakistan.

The airport was earlier known as Peshawar International Airport. It is in the city of Peshawar in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.
