As the summer travel season begins, new research by Travel data and analytics company Cirium reveals that August 9th is the busiest day of the year for air travel.

According to the report 17 million passengers will fly on more than 115,500 flights around the world on August 9 in those 24 hours the report said. It also says that 2019 is set to be one of the busiest years for air travel on record.

Indeed, the demand for air travel is escalating. As global passenger numbers continue to grow, the aviation industry must ensure better customer experience, reduce delays and cancellations as well as manage the growing numbers smoothly.

Here are some more traffic figures from around the world.

July and August top the charts for travellers across the globe

Almost seven million flights are scheduled to depart worldwide, with approximately a billion travellers packing their bags for leisure and business trips during the northern hemisphere summer alone. easyJet is set to fly up to 105,000 customers on 614 flights from the UK on domestic and European routes during these months. Meanwhile, despite a IT glitch that British Airways saw leaving thousands of passengers grounded on the airports in the UK, Heathrow is expected to carry up to 102,000 customers on August 9 on 583 long and short-haul flights.

US airlines attract most passengers

The busiest airlines around the world during these summer months encompass mostly US companies such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines as well as Irish budget airline Ryanair, carrying roughly 192 million passengers between them.

Beijing poised to entice travel enthusiasts after new airport design

With a $13bn refurbishment Beijing Daxing International Airport is expected to handle circa 45 million passengers in 2019. Around 132 million people are scheduled to take internal flights – accounting for 90% of all departures from China. For the rest, place in the likes of Thailand, Japan and South Korea top the charts on their summer agenda.

It’s unsurprising that the Beijing airport has already become one of the busiest airports globally alongside Atlanta, Dubai, Los Angeles and Tokyo-Haneda, with more than 51 million travellers predicted to transit through all these five.

Spain takes top position for British travellers

For UK travellers, Spain is the most popular destination over the two months, with more than 30,000 flights, carrying approximately five million passengers, scheduled to depart between the UK and the European destination.

While 9 August is the busiest day for global travelers, August 23 is expected to be the busiest day of the year for flights from the UK as nearly half a million UK travelers will jet off on the Friday before the late August bank holiday weekend, with a total of just over 2,600 flights scheduled to depart that day alone.

UAE globetrotters attracted to Indian cities

While Britons prefer the beaches of Spain, Emiratis are attracted to India. More than 8,500 flights are scheduled to carry nearly two million travelers from the UAE to India this summer. It comes of no surprise that more people are flocking to the country as Delhi Indira Gandhi, Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji and Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi airports earned the top three spots in the food and retail sectors. Other attractive destinations for UAE visitors include Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, as well as other Middle Eastern hotpsots.

American travelers favor exploring the US

The top flights in the US are domestic with over an estimated 178 million travelers expected to depart on more than 1.5 million flights on routes within the US. The most popular international destinations from the US include Canada, Mexico and the UK.
