Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA) in Belgium has signed a five-year strategic partnership with Telenet Group to implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology in a bid to enhance the passenger experience.

The key aim of the collaboration is to make the Brussels-Charleroi airport a true ‘digital dome’.

As part of the agreement, the partners will work on optimising airport operations and improving passengers’ experience during their journey from home to the boarding gate.

To achieve this, BSCA intends to implement digital solutions such as smart parking, an improved Wi-Fi network, and the analysis of visitor location data.

Daily passenger traffic at the Brussels-Charleroi airport is said to be around 25,000.

BSCA managing director Jean-Jacques Cloquet said: “We’re at the dawn of a new era in terms of technology, thanks to this partnership, with the aim of improving passenger services.

“It’s important to us to facilitate the journey of people passing through our installations and now, thanks to Telenet, we can help them from their home to the plane.

“We’re at the dawn of a new era in terms of technology with the aim of improving passenger services.”

“Becoming a connected airport was one of our priorities, and now we have the first stone that will allow us to build the BSCA digital dome, for a most pleasant passenger experience.”

Some of the priority areas of the partnership include passenger flow analysis and a connected smart parking system.

For passenger flow analysis, BSCA and Telenet will create a passenger and visitor flow mapping and analysis solution. The objective of the solution is to assist the airport management to better understand and manage the public’s movements at the airport.

Telenet will be responsible for improving and increasing the density of the airport’s Wi-Fi network as well as offering the location data of visitors to BSCA.

BSCA will then use the data to study their movements and offer them personalised services. Telenet is expected to deliver the first set of data next year.

Meanwhile, for the smart parking system, the parties will develop a scheme that will enable visitors to reserve and pay for a parking space online using the application.

Using smart cameras at the parking areas will allow for automatic recognition of the registration plate at the car park entrance. Passengers will get assistance from sensors connected by Telenet’s NB-IoT network in finding free spaces.
