Bombardier Transportation has secured a ten-year contract from Fraport AG for the operation and maintenance of the Bombardier Innovia APM 100 automated people mover (APM) system.

It will also be responsible for the modernisation of the signalling technology on Frankfurt Airport’s BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 solution.

The €103m ($113m) contract also includes an extension option for five more years of operation and maintenance.

Bombardier Transportation Germany head Michael Fohrer said: “We look forward to continuing our long-standing successful partnership with Fraport, whose 25th anniversary we celebrated last year.

“Our team is doing a great job to ensure that millions of travellers and guests arrive safely, comfortably and with almost 100% reliability at their destinations in the terminals around the clock. Modernising the fully automated passenger transport system will extend the life cycle of the entire facility, as well as its operation and maintenance by at least ten years.”

Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions head Richard Hunter said: “Our proven state-of-the-art CITYFLO 650 train control technology will prepare the system in Frankfurt for a digital future.

“This communication-based system can be installed without interfering with ongoing operations and tight schedules because it can be used together with the existing signalling technology and does not require the system to be shut down”.

This marks the second installation of the CITYFLO 650 CBTC in Germany. It is also used in airports in the US, China, Spain, Thailand, India, Saudi Arabia and Brazil.

The automatic passenger transport system has connected Frankfurt Airport’s Terminals 1 and 2 since 1994 and is named ‘Skyline’.

Last year, a consortium of two Bombardier joint ventures (JVs) in China received a contract to upgrade the APM system at Beijing Capital International Airport.
