Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH has expressed its satisfaction with the launch of Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (BER), despite facing difficult conditions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During its first 100 days, the new airport and its infrastructure provided efficient and reliable services, along with the technical facilities and handling processes that operated in a stable manner.

The German airport operator stated that the airport received positive feedback from both passengers and visitors.

Moreover, minor disruptions in the processes were resolved in a timely manner.

During its first three months, the airport handled around 700,000 passengers, representing approximately 10% of the numbers recorded in 2019.

In January, passenger traffic dropped drastically again, owing to the constricted lockdown and global travel restrictions.

On average, the airport is currently handling around 4,000 to 8,000 passengers a day.

Before the pandemic, around 100,000 passengers were managed by Tegel and Schönefeld airports in a day.

Due to the low volume of air traffic, the airport’s Terminal 5 will be temporarily shut from 23 February 2021.

Terminals 2 and 5 will resume operations after the improvement of the passenger numbers.

The airport took several hygiene measures, including regular disinfection of surfaces, fitting the terminals with plexiglass panes, social distance markers, and hand sanitiser dispensers.

BER has received two certificates for the highest level of hygiene and compliance with health regulations.

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg CEO Engelbert Lütke Daldrup said: “I would like to thank all employees of the airport company and our partners for the successful launch of Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt.

“We would have liked to have been able to assure more passengers of our modern, international standard, as BER is fully operational. Instead, the industry has been hit hard by the global coronavirus pandemic and is constantly facing new setbacks. Nevertheless, we are convinced that BER will play an important role in the economic recovery of the capital region.”

Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt commenced operations on 31 October 2020.
