The Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (BARIG) has expressed concern regarding the separate travel restrictions imposed by different countries in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

BARIG stated that the measures will lead to ‘a completely unmistakable patchwork of regulations’ that will create a lot of uncertainty among passengers.

There is a lack in the international ‘track and trace’ solution, which increases compatibility between the different government apps and permits data exchange.

According to the board, the management of the pandemic should be ‘coordinated and transparent’ to restore travellers’ trust and aid the economy.

BARIG secretary general Michael Hoppe said: “Countries that have adopted uncoordinated individual travel restrictions and regulations need to urgently rethink their actions.

“Joint, coordinated action by the international community, which also needs to be based on the recommendations of the expert bodies of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), is essential for overcoming the global economic consequences of the pandemic.”

BARIG has demanded joint assessment of the Covid-19 situation in the EU and around the world by the concerned institutions, including the European Commission (EC).

It also called for the adoption of EASA / ECDC and ICAO Take-Off Aviation Health Safety Protocols and the interoperability of contact tracing apps.

BARIG demanded clear information for travellers regarding the measures taken by the transport industry against Covid-19.

Hoppe stated: “Travel restrictions not only hit aviation to the core, but also place a heavy burden on the European and global economy and massively delay the urgently needed recovery.

“The cohesion of the international community and the close coordination of measures are essential for ensuring that travellers fly safely and at the same time the economic cycle is reactivated in the long term. With the comprehensive protection and hygiene precautions at the airports and on board the aircraft, aviation enables people to have a safe and healthy transport.”

Last week, Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe), Airlines for Europe (A4E) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned the prime ministers of European countries regarding the inconsistencies in Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Last month, ACI Europe and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) signed a cooperation agreement for the implementation of the joint EASA/ECDC COVID-19 Aviation Health Safety Protocol.
