Icelandic airport operator Isavia has chosen Alstef Group to upgrade the baggage handling system (BHS) at Keflavik Airport (KEF) in Reykjavik.

Alstef Group will be responsible for designing, building and integrating new arrivals and departure baggage handling systems at the airport.

Isavia Assets and Infrastructure director Maren Lind Másdóttir said: “We chose Alstef Group as a contractor for this project based on quality, price, and their technical compliance. We believe we can build a strong partnership with Alstef Group to make this complex project a success for us both.”

This turn-key project will see an upgrade to the outbound system, replacing the existing standard 2 hold baggage screening (HBS) system with an ECAC Standard 3 explosive detection system (EDS) machines, supplied by Smiths Detection.

The solution suggested by Alstef Group is claimed to offer enhanced conveyor connectivity and redundancy to the new EDS machines.

For arrivals, three existing arrival carousels and infeed conveyors will be replaced with two new inclined carousels and a new oversize inbound line.

The upgrade of the baggage system is part of the airport terminal expansion project.

Alstef Group Airport Sales head Philippe Hamon said: “Alstef Group has integrated baggage handling systems at airports all over the world, but this is our first project in Iceland.

“We intend to deliver Isavia a top-quality, innovative system, on-time, and on-budget, and we look forward to establishing a long-term partnership.”

In June, Alstef Group was selected to deliver additional baggage handling system (BHS) capacity at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow, Russia.
