Canada’s Edmonton International Airport (EIA) has signed an agreement with utility scale renewable projects developer Alpin Sun to develop a solar farm.
The 120MV solar farm, Airport City Solar, will be spread over 627 acres of land leased on the west side of EIA.

Construction on the facility is expected to commence in early 2022 and operations are set to commence by the end of that year.
This farm will bring in around $169m in foreign direct investment to the Edmonton Metro Region.
Energy generated by the solar farm will be fed into Fortis Alberta and airport distribution systems.
At the time of construction, the project will create jobs for around 120 workers with over 250 workers during the peak period.

The area of the solar farm is said to be comparable to 313 Canadian Football League football fields.
Alpin Sun will install around 340,000 solar panels, which will be split into two groups.
The East group will accommodate 72MW and will be spread over 367 acres while the West group will accommodate 48MW over 259 acres.

Last November, APT Pranoto Airport in Indonesia selected Total Solar Distributed Generation (DG) to provide solar-powered rooftops.
In October, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Dominion Energy Virginia agreed to jointly study the development of a 100MW solar energy project at Washington Dulles International Airport.
