Allegiant Travel Company has revealed its plans to set up a two-aircraft base at Gerald  Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, US.

The company operates an American discount airline known as Allegiant Air.

Allegiant has set aside more than $42m for its new base of operations that will accommodate two Airbus airplanes.

It has also launched a non-stop service to Nashville, Tennessee and Savannah, Georgia. The company will provide services on the new seasonal routes twice weekly.

These initiatives will create at least 66 new jobs in the state.

Gerald R Ford Airport will become the Allegiant’s 16th aircraft base and will allow the company to expand its service to and from the city.

Gerald R Ford International Airport Authority Board member Birgit Klohs said: “Allegiant’s decision to open a base at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport is a big win for the region, and will have a ripple effect through our economy beyond the initial jobs and investment.

“It speaks to the strength of our growing airport, which is critical for companies doing business in West Michigan and beyond.”

Allegiant plans to directly begin recruitment of pilots, flight attendants, and mechanics, as well as ground personnel to support the operations.
