UK-based technology and services company Air Black Box has introduced ThruBag, a new baggage transfer solution.

Air Black Box’s patented ThruBag system has been created for easy installation across airports and airlines, without the need to modify underlying systems.

The new solution is expected to aid airlines, including low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers and connecting airports to offer baggage services for self-connecting passengers.

ThruBag will enable self-connecting travellers to dodge the need of rechecking their luggage at connecting airports by checking their baggage to their final destination airport directly.

The solution offers the convenience of a thorough-checked interline baggage system.

Its services can also be availed by those passengers who are not travelling under legacy interline itineraries.

The company noted that the conventional airline and airport baggage processes only accommodate legacy itineraries where all flights are on the same ticket.

In a statement, Air Black Box said: “Until now, checked baggage has been a major pain point for self-connecting passengers and an obstacle to the faster growth of the self-connecting market. According to OAG, 58% of air travellers are aware of options to self-connect their flight itineraries, but only 40% of those travellers have self-connected.”

At present, self-connecting passengers repossess their checked belongings at their connecting airport and recheck them for their next flight.

Thereafter, they pass through the security checkpoint again for their connecting flight and are required to clear customs and immigration again, in case they are travelling internationally.

Air Black Box CCO Patrick Edmond said: “We’re confident that ThruBag will help our airport partners to position themselves as attractive connecting hubs while airlines can increase passenger satisfaction and choice and that means more revenue for both airports and airlines.

“Airlines can generate revenue by offering ThruBag as a valuable ancillary while expanding their network reach and airports enjoy the revenue benefits of more attractive connection opportunities and increased passenger airside dwell time.”
