Abu Dhabi Airports, along with renewable energy company Masdar, has completed the development of a solar-powered car park at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).
With nearly 7,542 solar panels, this three-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) project is said to be the largest solar-powered car park in the region.

The solar panels have been deployed on the car shading at the short-term car park of the airport’s Midfield Terminal.
The grid-connected project will provide energy to power the car parking space while the surplus energy will be diverted to other areas of the airport.
The complete turnkey solution for the project, including design, financing, procurement and construction, was offered by Masdar’s Energy Services department.
According to the lease agreement, the renewable energy company will also carry out operation and maintenance services for 25 years.

Abu Dhabi Airports CEO Shareef Al Hashmi said: “Throughout its development, we have integrated technology that enables sustainability, protects the environment and creates a cleaner, greener and more ecologically friendly building.
“Net-zero development has been a central ethos in the design and construction of the Midfield Terminal. By making smart and sustainable choices during its development in our use of double glazing, efficient lighting and environmental controls, we have achieved considerable reductions across the building’s wider energy use.”
The project supports the country’s Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to raise the share of clean energy in the UAE’s energy mix to 50%.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al-Ramahi said: “We look forward to leveraging our local and international experience to enable our partners to advance their clean energy goals through similar projects.”
